CARL-JOAKIM GIBBONS

Carl was born in Scandinavia and after migrating to Australia in the 80s, spent his school years in Melbourne. Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre were his childhood heroes, so it is no surprise that he became attracted to the electronic ambient music that blossomed with Melbournes early rave movement. With the support of local music organisations including Kiss FM, Green Ant Records and many enthusiastic gig promoters, Carls first forays into the electronic scene were hugely successful and his Northcore project quickly gained local recognition, especially in the techno scene.

LIVE PERFORMANCES AND RELEASES

Northcore music has appeared on many respected Australian and international compilation albums. There has also been modest commercial exposure with the dance single Clearlight, which Carl released as Little Loki. On Melbournes live circuit, Carl has played his diverse Northcore electronica to great success at the southern citys best underground clubs, raves, and forest parties.

Although live techno is most frequently the Northcore bill for city parties, it is his live ambient and psy-trance sets in the forest which receive the highest acclaim. Never content to just dance behind a laptop, Carls live sets are brimming with interactivity, weaving together audio from CDs, computer and synthesizer, miking up performers in the audience for impromptu solos. As a foundation member of Melbournes Kronik Krew, Carl has also engineered many of his own outdoor trance parties and indoor rave nights across the state of Victoria.

FUTURE GOALS AND PROJECTS

Following his relocation to the UK Carl pursued collaborative artist projects and production work. The increased studio-time paid off in the multi-media field, where Northcore music has now featured on websites, documentaries, short films, computer games, international fashion shows, and sporting videos. There was also rewarding work with talented vocalists and instrumentalists, and more recently remix work for EU-based dance labels. More recently Carl has been working hard on a full-length album for U.S. ambient label Spotted Peccary, and has been exploring the psy-trance scene of London with a view to playing more ambient gigs. In his time off Carl enjoys squash, beautiful breakfasts with loved ones, riding his bike, and looking at planes.
