Space Cowboy
In the year 1975 was born Nicolas Dresti in Nogent-Sur-Seine-France.
During the 80's he discovered Hip-Hop via TOTP performance of Step Off' by Grandmaster Melle Mel.Listening to Mike Allen's Electro show on Capital Radio and later Dave Pearce's Nite FM show.Watching Movies like 'Breakdance','Beat Street',Krush Groove'etc. After hearing Dj Cheese's scratching performance at UK Fresh in '86 and Dj Cashmoney's 1988 DMC world championship mix, he was inspired to hook up 2 turntables! These tastes developed into US and UK rap via Westwood's Capital Rap show. Stetsasonic,MC Duke,Hijack etc. Especially liked the fast underground UK stuff like Gunshot,2XDef,Blade,Caveman,Taskforce etc.
In the Early 90's , Nick attended an illegal outdoor rave. Heard Silver Bullet and breakbeat rave tracks like 'The Exorcist'by The Scientist played together. The connection was Made! More rave visits followed...Hired the 'programming' room for a day, at Rebel Mc's Noisgate sudios to create Hardcore (Breakbeat) track.Later released on white label to sell 2,000 copies. More studio visits followed...
Next, Jungle was the style and Dj Apex was the name! Started dj'ing on jungle pirate stations like Hackney's Format FM and Clapham's Don FM alongside 'Dj Trace' and 'The Goodfella'(who was later to become, one half of the Freestylers). Released jungle e.p. as Dj Apex with studio engineer Dj FT ,at about this time, Nick went SAE, an Audio Engineering college in Islington, to learn studio skillsĀ Amongst his Classmates was superstar dj to be... Mr.Jon Carter!
After being pressured into visiting a House music club, Nick heard Todd Terry's Hip-House style and made the connection between the 2 styles. Inspired by this and releases by WildChild on Loaded Records, Decided to record 'The Wildstyle' as Dj Supreme. Sampling UK rappers 'Hijack', it reached No.20 in the UK.
After this, recorded another Hip-House 'Go With The Flow' as Loop Da Loop sampling MC Duke.Sold very quickly on white label and was signed to Mercury's new label Manifesto.A UK top 40 followed...
Later, Armand Van Helden started sampling jungle records with house beats. At that time Manifesto Records had signed Todd Terry and generously offered me a remix of 'Something Feeling Good In My Soul'. The record was a smash in it's original form, UK no.4 and the Loop Da Loop remix (inspired by A.V.H) got plenty of club and radio play from the likes of Judge Jules and Pete Tong. This remix went on to form a large portion of one of Todd's follow up releases under his own name! Lots of remix offers followed, including : Felix The Housecat,Lisa Stansfield, Bobby Brown,Bomb The Bass (as Bomb Da Loop) Sash!, 5IVE, Afrika Bambaataa and.. between 30 and 40 remixes were completed around this time ('97-'98).
The most recent chapter starts here, with a visit to the Heavenly Social. Inspired By Norman Cook's dj'ing and his sound and the anything goes but it's got to be 'Funky' approach, Nick started sampling an old Stetsasonic vocal with some big hip-hop drums and guitars(!) recorded 'Hazel' as Loop Da Loop which went down well and reached No.20 in the UK charts.
At this time , some amazing house records were beng released, paricularly from France. This inspired him to re-evaluate House music. Sampling The Steve Miller Bands- 'Abracadabra' he recorded 'Round And Round' as a white label, which miracously appeared in the hands of Mr. Norman Cook, who soon contacted nick and offered to release it on Southern Fried Records. He agreed without hesitation, and 'Space Cowboy' was born!
Later, recorded a demo bootleg, sampling Paul MacCartney's Wings song 'Silly Love Songs'.Thinking there was no chance of clearing the sample, Norman Cook heard the mix, and being the gentleman that he is, played it to Sir Paul!!! Amazingly, he liked the track and personally gave the go-ahead for the remix, as an album of the 'Wings' back catalogue was scheduled for the Summer.Fantastic!
Recording as 'Space Cowboy', Nick has found a very happy home at Southern Fried Records and there is loads of new material to come..hold tight!!!
