Trance

Supernaturalistic Interview With Sander Van Doorn

After roughly three years you have gone on to become one of the leading trance acts in the world having remixed for the likes of Armin Van Buuren and a whole host of other artists along the way. What would you say has been your career highlight to date, and what has been your most defining moment?
I´ve had a lot of highlights to be honest, playing at Dance Valley for the first time, doing my first Essential Mix, getting into the top 100 on 32, climbing to 15, finishing my first album, etc. I think the Message In Bottle track I produced 2,5 years kinda set the basis to get where I am today.

Perhaps not many trance fans will be aware that you are also behind the Purple Haze and Sam Sharp aliases. Do you have a set agenda for these aliases or do you simply write tracks and then think which alias would suit it best? Is there any difference in the creative process for, say, a Sander Van Doorn record and a Purple Haze record?
Well the original idea behind using different aliases was to be able to produce different genres of music with Purple Haze on the more deeper tip Sandler for more euphoric stuff, Sam Sharp for the harder stuff besides doing more techy stuff under Sander van Doorn. I actually decided to put all projects under just Sander van Doorn though because I felt people made the connection anyway and it made more sense for me to start focusing on one name with still producing as diverse as I did before.

You’ve just released ‘Supernaturalistic’, your debut artist album. Where did the title come from for this?
At first we came with the idea of using the title “Supercalifragilistic” which is a part of ‘the longest word’ in the Mary Poppins play. We realized that using that title would create a few issues with Disney so we had to come up with something different but since I liked the super part of the title I came up with Supernaturalistic with naturalistic referring to the natural process of how the album came along.

It’s notable that with this album you’ve stripped your sound down, and on tracks such as ‘Grasshopper’ you’ve created a hybrid of the current minimal techno sound with your usual tech-trance sound. This has been a popular direction for many producers throughout 2008 so far. Do you see this as a natural progression for the sound of trance music?
I think so. The whole introduction of minimal opened a door to more dissonant melodies and also the “less is more” principle which found its way into trance as well. This new sound gives trance a fresh breeze and makes it so much more diverse and interesting.

The album comprises upfront and exclusive material alongside recent Sander Van Doorn singles including the superb ‘Back By Dope Demand’ and ‘The Bass’. What is your personal highlight on the album? And which single do you think you are most proud of from it?
For me the album is a highlight at itself because it gave me an opportunity to experiment a lot more and also tryout an even wider range of genres. Besides the older tracks like Riff, Grasshopper and By Any Demand tracks like Look Inside Your Head, The Bass and Apple are my favourites. To be honest I couldn’t make a choice which one of those I like most.

You’ve recently launched the Doorn label and already have an impressive catalogue spanning releases from Wardt, Abel Ramos and John O’Callaghan. Who do you tip for the top this year, and where do you aim to take the label throughout 2008?
I think producers like Wardt John O’ Callaghan and Marcus Schossow have a very bright future ahead, those I definitely top for this year and next year. My aim for the album is to take it to a top level with a very general acceptance of different genres.

You’ve recently remixed the single ‘The Girl You Lost To Cocaine’ by SIA. How did this remix come about?
I got this track as a promo a few months ago with the Stonebridge remixes and I completely loved it. I contacted my record company to try and get it signed on my label for the Benelux and also felt I could make a remix that would be suited for the clubs. Sia’s label loved the idea and that’s the whole history.

In an ideal world, if you could choose an ultimate line-up for a collaboration (for example someone on bass, vocals, drums etc) who would you choose and why?
I would definitely go with the bass guitarist from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers for the bass, me on the drums and keys and Tom Yorke (Radiohead) as lead singer. Nice!

Finally, you’ve just won the lottery and have been given an infinite budget to put on your own club event. Which venue do you choose, and which DJs would you like to see perform?
I think I would use the Guvernment (Toronto) as the venue and with dj’s like Jeff Mills, Josh Wink, Marco V, Benny Rodriguez, Eric Prydz, Carl Cox, James Zabiela, Eddie Halliwell and myself of course.
