Interview

How long have you been coming to the Miami WMC and what's some of the craziest party experiences you've had?

I've been coming to Miami for 6 years but I'm usually pretty hectic there doing press and demos and things, I think I'm one of the few people that actually does some work whilst being there! Maybe I've been looking at this whole WMC thing all wrong? Last year I did have a fun night out listening to Nic at Space. His friend, and reputable DJ, Spencer Parker ended up throwing his flip flops in the crowd then arm wrestled the barman (he failed) whilst I was accosted and had my stomach graffiti'ed on with marker pen. I won't relay what they wrote on me, but let's just say i was scarred. Until I had a few showers anyway, permanent pen is a tough one to wash off.

You must have stayed in some of the best hotels Miami has to offer. What's your favourite and why?

I don't really have a favourite. I end up somewhere different every year. Last year Nic booked us into the Delano (he's the organized one)! It was very P. Diddy, and I felt like a playa! He also booked the hotel this year so you'll have to ask him which one we're in as I've forgotten...

You will be using the Pioneer EFX unit for the show (which will then be signed by both you and Nic and given away as a prize.) What makes the EFX your weapon of choice when on the decks?

Everyone knows I love this baby, I use it as a sampler mainly, using the feedback echo feature to loop tracks and bits of tracks and manipulate them. It's a lot of fun. It adds a performance aspect beyond playing just one track into the next. Place it alongside Ableton and my Korg Kaosillator and you have powerful editing tools in the booth!

Most kids like to play music that their parents don't like when they are teenagers but your dad owned a cool dance music record shop! What sounds did you play to get a reaction when you were growing up?

He didn't actually own it but he would be in charge of the Techno section and by that I mean keeping all of it for himself! When I was growing up I was more into Nirvana and not an electronic music fan, it wasn't until I worked in the record shop and was exposed to it constantly that I caught the bug of the beats!

Technology plays an important part in your live performances and you're invited to give feedback to Pioneer when they make new hardware. What predictions do you have for the future of DJing considering how much things have changed in the last five years?

It's a tough question for me to answer without getting in trouble. I sign a disclosure form for Pioneer so let's just say they're always looking into the future. It's an exciting time!

The James Zabiela Track "Perseverance (Beatless Reprise mix)" will be exclusively available from Trackitdown.net. What's the creative process that goes in to making one of your own productions?

More recently I've been trying to make music that isn't really just for the dancefloor but something that has some sort of meaning to it. I'd like to make an artist LP of electronic music with songs on that's a journey into my warped mind as well as some ravey beats. It's been a weird couple of years in some ways and it's nice to have a way of expressing yourself. I can't wait to have some time to sit down down and write a full length record.

Any surprises in store for us at the Miami show?

It's too soon to say for someone who is as badly organized as me. But I won't be throwing flip flops into the crowd so fear not. I may run at you with a marker though, so just duck.
