Track Information:
Olly Perris is one member of Trackitdown's Content Management team, whose job it is to ensure that Trackitdown is kept up to date with all of the latest & greatest releases, DJ charts and new record labels. When he's not sat in his corner of the office listening to R&B (as he has a strange tendency to do), Olly does have a habit of unearthing a few hidden gems within our catalogue and coming across some of the best dance music on planet Earth.
Here, Olly selects 10 of the biggest within the TID catalogue and has provided a short description of each below.
1. Ben Watt - Lone Cat (Holding On) (Buzzin' Fly) - "It's a bit of a golden oldie, this, but it absolutely rocks. This was the track that Ben Watt used to launch the Buzzin' Fly label back in 2003 and it has since become one of the deep house genre's most defining records. I was reacquainted with this the other day when putting together our Five Of The Best bundle for Buzzin' Fly and it hasn't been out of my playlist since. An absolute essential in every sense of the word!"
2. Myers Briggs - Terminal (Sentient Sound) - "I have to be honest, I know absolutely diddly about the artist on this one. But what I do know that whoever he is, he's created an electronic masterpiece with 'Terminal'. It's so mind-blowingly simple yet so emotive, and although this type of minimal electronica has been done to death in recent times, for me at least nothing has come at all close to this."
3. rinôçérôse - Popular Mechanics (V2) - "rinôçérôse are a French electronica threesome who could best be described as a mish-mash of Daft Punk and Les Rhythmes Digitales. 'Popular Mechanics' however is simply an ambient masterpiece. I discovered this out of the blue one day checking out their 'Installation Sonore' album whilst doing some paperwork in the TID office and when this particular track came on, I was absolutely blown away. A perfect track for your iPod."
4. Rui Da Silva - Touch Me (Kismet) - "My favourite house record of all time, bar none. Everything about this record just works; the sultry vocals are married to the sleazy, druggy beats with such perfection and elegance. I love records with a story too, and this one has a great one. Apparantly the vocalist was a busker and was discovered randomly on the street and snapped up to record this track. I'm not sure if that's totally true or not, but I'd love to believe it is. I've highlighted the Dirty version here, only available on download and previously unreleased, so even if you do own the original I'd urge you to check this out."
5. Rogue Element - Let Me Breathe (Exceptional) - "There are very few records which you could play to fans of any styles of music to get a party going, but this is most certainly one of them. A track which encapsulates beautifully the 'party breaks' sound, 'Let Me Breathe' is the Rogue at his very best. Before joining the Trackitdown team I used to DJ at my University's party nights (think YMCA, Britney and the like) and I used to get away with dropping this just because it got people on their feet and shaking their arses. A superb breakbeat record ."
6. William Orbit ft. Sugababes - Spiral (Sanctuary) - "You might wonder about this one, but seriously give it a chance. I'm a big fan of the Sugababes (though I try not to let the rest of the office know that) as I honestly think they have some of the most beautiful female voices in pop music. 'Spiral' really shows off (in particular) ex-Babe Mutya Buena's haunting vocal prowess perhaps better than any record previously. And, of course, with William Orbit on the controls everything is mastered, produced and engineered to absolute perfection. Another ace chillout record and a superb mood setter."
7. Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (Tong & Spoon Remix) (Konichiwa) - "You can probably guess by now that I'm a sucker for a good female vocal and in this record, Robyn absolutely nails it. There are fewer examples throughout dance music of inherent emotion - in fact I'd go as far as to say that the passion in this record could rival that of Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morrisette and the like. An absolutely beautiful, sublime track which will pull on your heart strings on every listen."
8. York - Reachers of Civilisation (Rank 1 Remix) (Offshore Music) - "Everyone into dance music, whether they choose to admit it or not, had a soft spot for trance in 1999/2000. I had just turned 16 and had just gotten into DJing when tunes like 'Out Of The Blue' or Ferry Corsten's remix of 'Barbers Adagio For Strings' were about and I honestly felt like music couldn't get any better. Then this came along and frankly blew everything else out of the water. Of course now I look back and laugh at this somewhat naive stance, but when the guitars in this record come in, it all brings it back again. An absolute, bonafide anthem."
9. Tony De Vit - The Dawn (Paul Janes Remix) (Tidy) - "Prior to joining Trackitdown I worked as a Hard Dance producer, and so I guess that I will always have a soft spot for this genre. Paul Janes' legendary remix of the late Tony De Vit's 'The Dawn' is a shining example of how hard dance deserves so much more than the 'bosh music for gurn monkey's reputation it's given in the mainsteam press. It's said that 'The Dawn' was one of Tony's personal favourites, and exists as a perfect hybrid of euphoria, emotion and raw energy. Paul Janes (who engineered the original version) updated the track shortly after Tony's tragic death and, being the only man who could really do it justice, delivered the best remix of his career. Even if you can't stand hard dance, you cannot deny that this is a beautifully crafted piece of music."
10. Kamaya Painters - Far From Over (Black Hole) - "The Kamaya Painters are probably best known for their track 'Endless Wave' which hit the UK courtesy of Data Records and has been included on just about every 'Best Of Trance' compilation since. But there's two little known facts about this outfit, one is that The Kamaya Painters is actually a collaborative project of Rank 1 and DJ Tiesto and two, that 'Far From Over' is actually a much better record (OK, so the latter is my own opinion). Although now it sounds a wee bit dated, the melody is still as timeless as ever and remains to this day one of my personal favourite trance records. The office are bloody sick of it, though."
