Agents from Britains secret police forces MI5 and MI6 are routinely spying on networking sites like Myspace and Bebo, the Sunday Times revealed this week, to map social networks of people under surveillance. A Foreign Office spokesman told the paper there is constant monitoring of information, which the Times said is also shared with the CIA.
People are starting to put very intimate details about themselves and other people on line, its fertile territory for intelligence agencies, said Privacy International director Simon Davies.
You can convince people to reveal information they never normally would and you can extract information about their friends and associates, he told the Times.
The revelations failed to shock drum & bass/ electro don John B whos so familiar with Myspaces dark side that hes just released a single called Ive Been Stalking You On Myspace. John told Skrufff his rocking electro/ D&B style single is meant to provide some light-hearted social commentary as well as a list of myspace clichés that mildly annoy him.
Ive noticed a lot of people communicate via your comments rather than sending you private messages, like they want people to see that youre talking to them. John added, Thats a recipe for stalkers.
While his own stalker experiences have so far been limited to an ex-girlfriend from five years ago, he admitted his openness is definitely a potential issue for concern.
Because of my Myspace page and weblog its easy to follow what Im doing and who Im hanging out with, said John.
This ex-girlfriend still hasnt really let go and it culminated in an incident when I played in LA a couple of months ago. She turned up as I was talking to other people and started shouting and being really weird. Then she started hugging the speaker at the front of the stage throughout my set and talking to herself. Though thats more a case of somebody being insane more than a stalker, he mused.
