Christian Varela Comes To London (Interview)

Prepare to be astounded by the 4 deck wizardry of Cristian Varela, whose amazing technical skills are duly matched by his ability to bring the energy on the floor ever higher. Little wonder that he's won “Best Spanish Techno DJ of the year” 8 years running along with a host of other accolades…  We caught up with him ahead of his gig b2b Marco Bailey at Spiritoso on November 25th…

How has your year been?

Too much work! I need a holiday urgently!

What were the highlights?

Space Ibiza with Carl Cox and my own nights with MarcoBailey at EDEN Eivissa

Can you remember how you felt when you first heard electronic music and why you liked it?

As I was doing my classical studies, I heard Kraftwerk and Vangelis and I was very surprised and captivated, immediately started to investigate all the electronic music.

What made you want to become a DJ/producer?

My passion for the electronic music and the world of the creativity.

What have you been listening to most this year? Have your tastes evolved?

Vivaldi, Haendel, Bach and lots of Chill, Ambient and downtempo stuffs like Pete Namlook, Klaus Shulze, Murkof…

My tastes always fortunately evolved month after month and year after year. My mind is always searching for new ways…

And what have been the major changes in the scene since you first started out?

The professionalism of all our sector: managers, promotors, clubs, press, radios, network,… and the artists.

What do you aim to achieve with the music you make?

I am going to the concert and symphonic way. In the electronic world I like the fusion with all the styles that I like (House, Techno, Minimal and Athmospheric).

You’re playing back to back with Marco Bailey in London – have you done it before? How does it work?

Never! It was our first time and we was very surprised with our connection and synchronisation. The reaction in the dance floor was amazing and that´s why now we are preparing a CVMB tour around the world.

What should people expect from you in London?

Energy, power and of course excellent music.

What else you got coming up?

My new electronic album on Intec Recordings (Carl Cox´s and Jon Rundel´s label) and a really surprising new stuffs in my Label (with Marco Bailey) Pornographic Recordings.

Who are you outside of music day to day?

A person who like spend the time with my girlfriend or my friends at home, theatres, opera, concerts…
