Defected Chief’s Vocal Plea

Reported by Joshua [Trackitdown] on April 12, 2012

UK house guru Simon Dunmore praised new producers including Solomun, Deetron and At Jazz for ‘bringing the soul into clubs these days’ though issued a pointed warning to instrumental obsessed veterans.

There's still massive need 4 vocals &soul within House music,” the Defected Records founder and globe-trotting DJ wrote on Twitter.

“Some producers need to get real about what’s working with the new generation of clubbers,” he recommended.

His assessment struck a chord with the views of influential Berghain DJ Andreas Baumecker who, chatting to Skrufff earlier this year, was outspoken about leaving loads of vocals in his acclaimed remix of S.C.U.M.’s Whitechapel (co-produced with Sam Barker).

“I personally LOVE vocals. I think they are, in many cases, the only real thing that you take home in your memory after a long night out; even if it is only a vocal stab constantly repeating itself,” said Andreas.

“Unfortunately a lot of DJs, worldwide and not only in Berlin, are not taking risks anymore. They are all playing safe not to lose their audiences,” he suggested. (Defected artist Osunlade -Crazy You) (no vocals)
