Carlo is a DJ, producer and a businessman. The Toronto based Lio is also one of the hottest names in techno right now. We caught up the man himself to celebrate the launch of his amazing new album on Dubfire's own label. If you love techno then make sure you check it out alongside his recommedations below...

Thanks very much for taking time out to speak to us! Can you tell the readers where you are in the world today and what you’ve been up to over the last 7 days?

Thanks for having me :) The past seven days and the next seven are quite intense. Last week I was in Barcelona. I live there during the summer.  This past Saturday I played Awakenings in Amsterdam. I then flew directly to Toronto to play another festival called Digitak dreams. Now I am on my way to NYC to play July 4th party with the Martinez Brothers. Then flying back the next day back to Toronto to spend one more night at home and see my family. Then on Thursday July 5th I will fly to Ibiza to play the opening party of Marco Carola's "Music On" party at Amnesia. Then I will sleep for 4 days straight. Lol

Last week saw the release of your awesome compilation album for Dubfire’s SCI+TEC label. Can you tell us a bit about how you went about choosing the tracklist and creating the mix?

Well I've been following SCI+TEC since its birth. So I’m very familiar with the catalogue. There is such a huge variety and styles so i just tried to include as much as possible without compromising my sound or the flow of the mix.

The album is a great benchmark that showcases your rise to the premier league in the techno world. Has this building of your career been something you tried to strategise? If so, how’s the plan going?

Yes definitely. Strategy is a very important factor in this business. Making the right decisions, working with the right people, playing the right parties and respecting the politics without letting them bite you in the ass all reflects on you and your image in this industry. I've always said this feels like a chess game at times. So far it’s going well for me. I have had a great few years and love the people i work with. The people that are behind me provide me with the real advice i need to keep climbing this ladder.

Obviously music production plays such an important part in building a career and you’ve had no shortage of great tracks out! How do you choose which label to give your music to, and have you made a conscious effort to release on a wide portfolio of brands rather than just one? If so, why?

Yes production is the golden key of course. Very few can actually succeed without productions in this day and age.  There are a lot of labels out there I love and respect and that basically how I choose. If i don't play any music on a certain label, chances are i will have no desire to release with them regardless of the offer given. I like to stick to high profile labels that I love and love to work with. I’ve released on a wide variety over the years, but as I’m sure you noticed I’ve cut down a lot and am trying to stick to a few key ones.

Are there any labels on your hitlist that you’d still like a release on? If you could choose any label from any period to get signed to, which would it be/have been and why?

Yes I’m sure every producer has their targets they would like to see themselves on. For me Desolat is one. Also Saved is another. So hopefully I can get these at some point in my career.

You’re from Toronto which has always been a great party city. What’s the scene like there right now and which three spots would you recommend to a visitor to check out if they were hitting the town?

Yes Toronto is an amazing city with no shortage of parties. Club wise there may not be as much as before but hands down the #1 club is Footwork. #2 The Guvernment. #3. The Comfort Zone.  Definitely worth checking out.

We’ve seen your tour diary and you’re well and truly going global this summer! What’s the state of play for techno out there in 2012 and do separate parts of the world prefer different sounds or are we all dancing to the same beat right now!?

Well with electronic music constantly growing & growing, I really have found that there is love for all types in all areas. Every country I play in I always like to ask "what else is happening tonight?". The answers are usually the same.  There is techno party here, a deep house party there, nu-disco party there.  So it is hard to place a specific sound to a specific place because I do find a lot in every place. This is definitely a good thing :).

As a high tech artist, do you have a high tech set up when performing? What’s your preferred set up?

Not at all. I run Traktor internally, using 4 decks, with two Native Instruments X1 Controllers. I am very happy with this set up as it allows me to really have full control over my set and manipulate it like never before. I don’t plan on changing my setup anytime soon.

Obviously your tour schedule is packed out and you’ve just been given the honour of creating a futuristic album for Dubfire, what’s next on the agenda for Carlo Lio!?

Well I'm constantly on tour but the next step with respect to the album is most likely to create a few tours based around the album. Besides that, I have now moved back to Barcelona where I will spend the whole summer and tour out of here. My schedule is pretty intense and being in Europe vs Canada makes it much easier for me. Around November I will get back into the studio and start working on my releases for 2013.  I’m happy to have completed my 2012 productions.

Finally, we’re definitely having a renaissance of the superstar DJ age! What’s the most superstar thing Carlo Lio has done over the last 12 months!?

LOL. Let me clarify something first. It’s never been my mission to be a "superstar". Just to make a good living doing something I love. Having said that, i guess having the chance to fly on a private jet (not mine) was definitely something cool for me. I won’t lie, I hope I get the chance to do that again :)

Sadly that is all we have time for. A big thanks to Carlo Lio for taking the time out to speak with us.
