HMV Boss Justifies ‘No Tattoo’ Rule

Reported by Joshua [Trackitdown] on November 5, 2012

Record store marketing manager Mark Hodgkinson refused to back down on his new plan to force staff in HMV to cover up large tattoos and body piercings this week, claiming his ‘appearance policy’ has been ‘taken out of context and sensationalised’.

The new policy provoked ridicule last week after the British retail chain ordered staff to cover up ‘extensive body art’, though Hodgkinson told Marketing Week his new plan is about ‘encouraging more diversity of customers and making them feel comfortable, welcomed and embraced by our stores.’

“Bear in mind we're trying to attract broader customers,” he explained, “and it (tattooed and body pierced staff) could be something that would deter some customers". (Marketing Week:

The new policy is likely to prove popular with evangelical organisation Dial-The-Truth Ministries, who some years ago labelled tattoos ‘the mark of depravity’, in a booklet published specifically to warn of their true meaning.

“In Leviticus 19:28 the Lord gives a clear condemnation of tattoos,” the US organization pointed out, reprinting the particular scripture (‘Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:28’. (

“Criminals, drug addicts, sex perverts and social outlaws are the overwhelming majority of the tattooed,” D-T-T added, “Statistics, both old and recent, clearly reveal tattoos are largely worn by the rebellious and deviant.”

Fellow Biblical scholar David J. Stewart, similarly branded tattoos as ‘marks of Satan’ on his equally impartial blog, in which he savaged the Christian Tattoo Association.

“Not one Christian in the entire Bible ever received a tattoo.  Not one!  Jesus never wore a tattoo!  None of the Apostles wore tattoos,” Mr Stewart pointed out.

“How ridiculous and absurd to claim that God approves of tattoos, when Leviticus 19:18 clearly prohibits such demonic practices,” he added. (Christian Tattoo Association) (‘Hitler reacts to the negative backlash from HMV's new clothing policy . . ., Youtube)
