Italian duo Phunk Investigation is formed by Dino & Stef, their trademark sharp synths have been morphed into a funk nightmare, while the beefy productions and intense breakdowns show us why nobody should ever mess with The Phunk!
Thanks very much for taking the time out to speak to us! Can you tell the readers where you are in the world today and what you’ve been up to over the last 7 days?
We're where it's summer already. In the deep south of Italy, Sicily's Godfather Island!!! In the last 7 days we've been in the studio, handling the label and we had a gig in Rome Brancaleone on Saturday.
Can you tell us how long you have been in the game & how the Phunk Investigation partnership was initially formed?
We joined forces for the first time on 1996 in Naples for an artist collaboration and to create the label Absolutely Records. From 2001 Dino & Stef became the Phunk Investigation, best known for their hit ''Flawless (Go To The City)' with George Michael.
How would you describe your sound as obviously it sits on the boundaries of both tech house & techno?
Tech House and Techno feel good for us. It's totally pure energy!! Peak time for big rooms always.
Can you please give us an update on your two labels Miniatures Records and Phunk Traxx?
Miniaturesrec and Phunk Traxx are our 2 labels. We release music for fans, lovers of a piece impervious to the logics of mass-production. Straight up 100% techno and tech house.
Any exciting new releases or signings in the pipeline?
Stefano Noferini, The YellowHeads, RiotGear, Ant Brooks, Filthy Rich, Tomy DeClerque, Hitchcock and other new talented producer / djs.
What does your studio consist of?
The set-up: Korg DVP1, Revox Analog Tape Recorder, Tascam TSR-8, Analog Tape Recorder, Korg Dw8000, Korg Polysix, M-audio Keyboard, oberheim matrix 1000, UAD-2, Vst and Vsti Plugins, Monitors Dynaudio BM15A
Have you each got your own space to lay down ideas or is it purely a team effort from start to finish?
Our music influences and inspirations come from Electronic 80's, psychedelic, Funky and other genres where we find the right mood.
Please can you give us one vital Phunk Investigation studio secret that you employ as a rule on each production?
To give the best balance with trebles and basses in the final mixes but our special trick is definitely the final mastering: if it's done properly it will give a great overall sound.
We notice a lot of early rave samples in many of your productions? What were your first & early rave experiences like and is this where these influences come from for your music?
We decided to treat samples in the same way we would do with musicians and singers in a real studio production. We absolutely enjoy using samples as they give us the freedom to make up all kinds of different combinations. Try to use our sample pack, there are plenty of incredible sounds. They will get a little closer to produce a Phunk-like track for sure!
Which newcomers are impressing you most at the moment and is there any rising talent you've noticed on your travels we should look out for?
Hitchcock's our newcomer from Sweden. His fresh sound is impressing the club scene thanks to the collaboration with Phunk Investigation, along with David Penn and other artists.
Your performing over two dates in Scotland this May with Ruckus Rave, the 10th in Edinburgh and the 11th in Inverness. Are you excited to hit Scotland, what can they expect?
We love Scottish people, we know them, they have big Heart...........Jim Kerr from Simple Minds's is one of our best friend!
You must get booked for a diverse selection of gigs which parties do you find most inspiring worldwide, the house or techno crowds?
To play on the Toolroom stage of Ultra Music Festival in Miami has been one of the best experiences. The top until now!
