We sent Joost 'Toast' Veerman to catch up with Camelphat to discuss this year's DJ Awards in Ibiza.
The first thing in my mind was: Why not CamelToe?
We love camel toes actually, I think we have a camel toe right now in these tight skinny jeans! Good question by the way..why not CamelToe, we don’t know! We probably got the wrong book when we started, not that Phat is any better but we just don’t take it all to seriously to be honest .
How has the summer been? We see you guys have been around including playing the legendary Space..
The whole thing has been crazy, lots of festivals. We didn’t expected to be booked in Ibiza but we did, one thing read to another. We had three gigs here in Amnesia and Pacha with Pete Tong and Creamfields at Space. It means a lot! The closing of Space last night was a bit emotional to be fair and we wondered how many euro’s we've spent there in the last decade, happy to have met so many cool and crazy people.
The DJ Awards, how do you see this event here at the end of the season on Ibiza.
It’s the right location! We think it’s good to have these things for the industry, especially as there is not so much recognition for DJ’s anymore and for their music in general within awards ceremonies. Not that anybody needs to be told that you are good at the job or whatever, but dance music does so many good things for the world and music in general. So we’re pushing things forward collectively. Good energy!
[We make a toast on the good life, with beer in wine glasses]
Being connected to Ultra, did it change something for your music carreer?
Well, we’ve done a release, “that one with Jaxxon..” To be fair, it was so early in the whole CamelPhat calendar. I don’t think we really followed up on them. Where we see ourselves and where we want to be is a kind of a different direction (without sounding like an ass about it). We choose a different path, a different way musically. We probably could have done more, but we think our music is more well suited to underground labels.
The question that I’ve written down before I checked your pictures was: “I wanted to ask about the best cleaning soap for the masks after a good night of pumping house music?” However, since you don’t were them…so why the masks in the logo and not on stage?
Hahaa well, the original idea was to wear them..but we managed one gig, one single gig. Oh no two!
One was in the bedroom?
Ha ye, well it was really warm with them on..and better to see what you are doing without!
Due to the masks, are any of you into Mexican wrestling maybe?
Funny enough ye! We had a gig in Brooklyn two weeks ago and there was a ‘fight’ on the telly, we had a good watch!
What can the TID users expect from you guys in the the nearby future?
Gig wise coming up this month: three gigs in the UK, the Amsterdam Dance Event and an American tour at the end and beginning of November! Tune wise a few remixes coming out and an EP and track together with Bontan and Josh Butler, a 3 track EP. Two down, one to go.
We were surprised by the line on the Facebook page that camels can kick in all four directions with each of there legs. Can you show us a proper camel kick?
It’s true! Yes for sure..HIIIII YA! *The guys jump up b2b and make a huge kick*
You just had to be there to see it...
